Watch: Padres rock out in dugout to Smash Mouth’s ‘All Star’
It turns out that the San Diego Padres are actually quite spicy memelords. The team got pumped for Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals with an impromtpu dugout jam session to Smash Mouth’s 1999 classic hit “All-Star.” Take a look at the video (featuring lead vocals by Franmil Reyes and some mean air guitar by Fernando Tatis Jr). The song, which has withstood the test of time well beyond its original run thanks to a ubiquitous presence in meme culture as associated with the Shrek franchise, did not ultimately do the Padres much good. They got cooked to the tune of four straight home runs by the Nationals in the eighth inning and wound up losing 5-1, not exactly looking like the sharpest tools in the shed. At least we can say that this isn’t the first time that the California sports scene has been sanctified by the angelic touch of Smash Mouth.
