UFC Rio Rancho: Brok Weaver is the debut fighter to watch
Lightweight prospect and Contender Series alum Brok Weaver is the debut fighter to watch this Saturday at UFC Rio Rancho.
On the same main card that features light heavyweight contenders Corey Anderson and Jan Blachowicz, a fighter from a small eight hundred person town in Alabama will make the walk. Lightweight Brok Weaver is the debut fighter to watch this weekend at UFC Rio Rancho.
The 28-year-old Alabama native has been fighting his whole life. A proud member of the MOWA Band of Choctaw Indians, Weaver has never been one to shy away from a fight. Weaver began fighting from a young age, often fighting grown men twice his age in amateur bouts at local venues. Weaver has an extensive amateur background, one that involved both MMA and boxing bouts. Since turning professional at the age of 21, Weaver has compiled a respectable 14-4 record, with one of those wins coming on Season 3 of Dana White’s Contender Series. Weaver defeated Devyn Smith at welterweight in an entertaining bout, catching the eye of UFC president Dana White. White offered Weaver a UFC contract the same day, solidifying his spot on the UFC’s roster.
Weaver was originally slated to face lightweight Thomas Gifford in October at UFC Tampa, however Weaver was forced to withdraw from the bout just days before their scheduled bout. Now healthy and ready to go, Weaver has a chance to make a name for himself in a sport where fresh new faces can shine if they have the right mix of personality and fighting ability.
Currently riding a 7-fight winning streak, Weaver is most certainly looking to make it 8 by winning his UFC debut in exciting fashion. Weaver is set to square off against fellow lightweight Rodrigo “Kazula” Vargas on the main card this Saturday. At 34 years old, Vargas (11-3) will be making his second attempt to secure a UFC victory after losing in his debut. Vargas lost a three round unanimous decision to Alex da silva Coelho at UFC Uruguay in August. Vargas trains out of Mexican Pride Gym in Mexico City, Mexico and needs to pick up a win here in order not drop to 0-2 in the promotion. Combine Weaver’s tenacity and aggression with Vargas’ need for a win, and you have a recipe for what should be a tough battle with both men laying it all on the line.
Seeing as the UFC put a debut fighter against a one-fight veteran on the main card, it usually means that they have faith the fight will be very entertaining. A win for Weaver in his debut could open doors to other intriguing matchups in the UFC’s lightweight division, which is arguably the deepest division in the entire promotion. Catch Weaver vs. Vargas on the main card of UFC Rio Rancho this Saturday night.
