A 12-year-old with underlying health conditions is among the latest to die after testing positive for coronavirus, as 282 new deaths are confirmed.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said 36,675 people had died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Friday, up by 282 from 36,393 the day before.

In the 24-hour period up to 9am on Saturday, 116,585 tests were carried out or dispatched, with 2,959 positive results.

Overall a total of 3,348,507 tests have been carried out and 257,154 cases have been confirmed positive.

NHS England has announced 157 new deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 25,544.

Among the latest deaths announced on Saturday by NHS England was a 12-year-old with underlying health conditions.

The 157 included patients aged between 12 and 100. Of these, seven – aged between 57 and 88 – had no known underlying health condition.

The youngest death to be announced by NHS England was a six-week-old baby.

The number of confirmed coronavirus deaths in Scotland has risen to 2,261, with an increase of 16 on the previous day.

The Health Protection Scotland statistics also indicate 15,041 people have now tested positive for the virus north of the border, up by 72 from 14,969 on Friday.

As of Friday night there were 841 cases in hospital following a positive test, with 36 of those in intensive care along with another 14 in intensive care with suspected Covid-19.
