Why Stoke City star has no Manchester City regrets

Tyrese Campbell is one of those rare players having no regrets about leaving Manchester City.

It was a big decision, the biggest of his fledgling career, and one he reflected on briefly in the after glow of scoring his first league goal for Stoke to set up Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fulham.

Campbell, who turns 20 in December, said: “I was at Man City from seven to under-16. I got offered a scholar there, but for my career I didn’t think it was a good option to sign there.

“If you look at it now, even Phil (Foden), who’s an unbelievable player, he’s not getting the minutes he deserves.

“So what am I going to do? So I came here, got the minutes I needed, got the experience out on loan and that’s all I can ask for.

“I’m not really bothered what club I’m at as long as I’m playing top level. That’s all I can ask for.

“I knew I could play a lot sooner (than he could at Man City).

“It was all up to me really. Obviously my mum and my dad would support me and they said `do whatever you want and we’ll be happy with that.’

“And I said `I want to challenge myself and be playing first team against the players I’ve watched on TV and played with on FIFA.’

“Obviously Stoke came in for me and that was that.”

Campbell – who’s still growing and measure in at six foot, one at present – went down shortly before being subbed to raise further concerns about his stamina for a full game, but he disclosed: “No, I was fine, just game management!”

And on the stamina issue, he continued: “It’s fine. It’s not easy when you haven’t played many 90-minute games.

“My last one was a friendly against Sheffield United last week when I played 90.

“Before that, my last 90 was Lincoln in pre-season, so it’s always going to be tough to get the minutes in my legs when I’m on the bench.

“I think it’s important for me now that I’m hopefully getting a regular run to build that up and build up my confidence.”
