Nate Diaz smokes cannabis oil with fans days ahead of UFC 241 fight – his first bout since defeat to Conor McGregor – The Sun
NATE DIAZ showed he was totally relaxed ahead of his fight at UFC 241 this weekend – by smoking CANNABIS oil with fans during open workouts.
The fan favourite makes his octagon return on Saturday facing old rival Anthony Pettis in his home of California.
Having not fought since a majority decision loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 202 in August 2016 the Stockton native reminded fans of his unique character by smoking CBD oil on stage.
Diaz infamously smoked CBD oil after his rematch defeat to The Notorious – which at the time was on the United States Anti-Doping Agency banned substance list.
However, USADA have since made it legal in and out of competition.
Diaz profited by the update to the rules by producing his own CBD line Game Up Nutrition.
The UFC also signed a deal with Aurora Cannabis to help fighters take supplement to treat aches and pains after a fight.
Diaz told ESPN he was the pioneer to having the once banned substance legal for fighters in the UFC.
What is CBD oil?
CBD cannabis oil is a substance extracted from the cannabis plant by steam distillation.
Cannabis oil is usually consumed orally, and has a very distinct taste.
This low-concentrate version of the oil is available to buy in the UK and is not illegal.
Products are required to contain less than 0.05% THC.
THC (or Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive component in cannabis that makes users feel “high”.
There have been high profile calls for higher concentration oil to be made legal.
The family of epilepsy sufferer Billy Caldwell, 12, were granted an exemption by the Home Secretary Sajid Javid to take concentrated CBD cannabis oil after insisting it was a lifeline.
And Alfie Dingley’s parents say the six-year-old should be allowed the same treatmentafter describing its impact on his seizures as “nothing short of a miracle”.
On November 1, 2018, medical cannabis became available to patients in the UK on NHS prescription.
He said: “Did you see that CBD deal I got for the UFC? They got a huge deal – you’re welcome motherf***ers!
“That’s cool, but can I get my points? Who brought CBD to the table?
“Now everybody has got these CBD sponsorships. Now it’s in football, in basketball, and it’s legal. UFC is paid out.
“Everybody is in the cannabis movement now ‘cause of your boy.
“I appreciate the love from the UFC, for showing who started this gangster s***.”
Diaz’s brother Nick was given a five-year ban in 2013 after failing post-fight drug test for marijuana metabolites after his loss to Anderson Silva.
Silva later tested positive for drostanolone, androstane, oxazepem, and temazepam in a pre-fight drug screening and the fight was declared a no-contest.
Nick spent four months appealing the failed marijuana test and eventually got it reduced to just 18 months and a £82,000 fine.
However, after all the time spent appealing the decision the MMA veteran has not fought since the middleweight fight at UFC 183.
Because Nick failed to pay his NSAC fines he was not eligible to corner his brother in his high profile fights with McGregor.
