Frome boxer offers mugging victim free boxing sessions to rebuild confidence
A professional boxer from Frome has offered free boxing sessions to the victim of a mugging on Saturday.
News broke on Tuesday that a 17-year-old boy was targeted in Victoria Park on Saturday evening.
Ryan Wheeler, 26, instantly responded to a post about the news to offer the victim some free sessions to help him learn some defence.
“Message to the young boy who was punched. Come along to my boxing classes Free of charge and learn some self defence and rebuild some confidence,” he wrote.
Speaking after the offer was made, Mr Wheeler, who lives in Frome, said he had seen boxing help a lot of people find some confidence.
“I was just scrolling through Facebook and I saw the news come up,” he said.
“I’ve seen a lot of young lads who come up to the gym and they always start off quiet but it brings them out of their shell and gives them that confidence. I want to help this young man get that.”
The professional fighter, who boxes in the super-featherweight division and holds a record of 15 wins from 17 bouts, found boxing after moving to Leicester from the West Country as a kid.
After getting into a fight when he was picked on for his accent and getting beaten, he found out his opponent did boxing training and decided to go himself.
While he has yet to hear anything from the victim, Mr Wheeler is still hopeful of welcoming him to Frome Boxing and Fitness, his training setup, soon.
“I haven’t heard anything yet but hopefully I will,” he said.
“Hopefully I will hear from him or some of his family or friends over the weekend, so I’ll keep my ears open.”
Avon and Somerset Police said house-to-house enquiries have been carried out and an investigation is ongoing.
A statement said: “A 17-year-old boy was approached by three men aged in their late teens or early 20s in Victoria Park on Saturday night (September 7).
“The offenders initially asked the boy for money before searching him, prompting him to call out for help. He was then punched in the face by one of the men multiple times.
“The incident happened sometime between 11.30pm and 11.45pm.
“The offender who assaulted the victim is described as being approximately 5ft 9ins tall with blonde hair. He was wearing tracksuit trousers and a long-sleeved top.
“Another was said to be 6ft tall and wearing a puffa-style jacket.
“A lighter, a set of keys and an ID card were stolen in the incident.”
Anyone with information should call 101 and provide the call handler with crime reference 5219206854.
